A Spell of Good Things

Updated: Jul 2

A Spell of Good Things is a poignant novel by Ayòbámi Adébáyò, set in contemporary Nigeria. The story revolves around Wúràolá, a junior doctor from a wealthy background, and Eniolá, a schoolboy and apprentice tailor grappling with his family's descent into poverty.

As Wúràolá contends with the challenges of a strained healthcare system and her parents' expectations for marriage, Eniolá's family faces daily beatings for unpaid school fees and the threat of eviction. The novel intricately explores their disparate lives, drawing parallels between their experiences influenced by familial expectations and Nigeria's political and economic climate.

The characters' paths ultimately converge to a dramatic conclusion. Adébáyò's storytelling style immerses readers in the complex layers of Nigerian society, covering healthcare, politics, education, and relationships. The well-rounded and believable characters make the whole story a compelling and emotional read.
