Adam Kay: Undoctored

This week, I had the pleasure of attending Adam Kay's latest show, fresh off his record-breaking run at the Edinburgh Fringe.

As a nurse, I’ve followed Adam Kay's work with great interest ever since the release of This Is Going to Hurt. I went on to read Twas the Nightshift Before Christmas and Dear NHS.

His writing has resonated deeply with me, and when the TV adaptation came out, like many others, I found myself laughing and crying in equal measure.

Within my role in the NHS, particularly in light of the pandemic, staff well-being has been a major focus of mine. I’m thrilled to see Adam continuing to highlight this crucial issue, both through his work and with the support of his team.

Adam's current tour, promoting his latest book Undoctored, takes us on a journey through his time in medical school, as a doctor, and his experiences post-author life. I brought my husband along, who doesn’t work in the medical field, and I could see just how eye-opening Adam’s stories were for him.

Adam Kay is, without a doubt, one of the most engaging storytellers I’ve had the pleasure of seeing. His dry wit is genius, making every moment feel personal, as if he's speaking directly to you. He seamlessly transitions between hilarious readings and self-composed songs, showcasing his impressive grade 8 piano skills.

As a neonatal nurse, the closing of the show held a special significance for me. Alongside my work on NHS staff well-being, I’m always considering ways to support neonatal parents and families, as the neonatal experience can be both traumatic and overwhelming. I truly appreciate the time and care that families take to share their stories.

Overall, this is a fantastic show filled with highs that will have you in stitches, and moments that make you pause and reflect.

My husband, for one, will never view a lamppost the same way after hearing the infamous “degloving” story.

A big thank you to the production team, Gag Reflex, for inviting me to attend. My only regret was not being able to stay for the book signing—thanks to the size of the queue and the unreliable Northern Trains!

If you get a chance, check Adam's tour schedule here and see if there's a show near you. It’s absolutely worth it!
