By Abi DarƩ
In And So I Roar, Abi DarƩ weaves a poignant tale of courage, friendship, and the quest for truth against the vibrant backdrop of Nigeria.
The narrative kicks off with Tia, who inadvertently overhears a hushed conversation between her terminally ill mother and aunt, igniting a desperate need to uncover a secret that has lain dormant for nearly two decades. This revelation sets the stage for a gripping emotional journey.
Back in Lagos, we meet Adunni, a determined fourteen-year-old runaway who has just found refuge in Tiaās home after escaping the confines of her rural village. Her excitement about enrolling in school embodies the dreams of countless young women seeking education and empowerment. The author beautifully captures Adunni's spirit, her hope shining through the challenges she faces.
However, the tranquillity is shattered when a disturbing knocking at the gate signals the start of a harrowing ordeal. Tia is faced with a heart-wrenching dilemma: should she protect Adunni, or should she delve deeper into the secrets of her past?
The tension between these choices keeps the reader engaged and invested in their fates.
Adunniās ālouding voiceā emerges as a powerful symbol throughout the story, representing not just her struggle for survival but the collective fight of young women from her village, Ikati. As she learns to advocate for herself and others, her journey becomes a beacon of hope for change and empowerment.
The writing is both evocative and heartfelt, skilfully portraying the struggles of the characters while highlighting the importance of education and self-advocacy. And So I Roar is not just a story about personal growth; it's a rallying cry for all women to claim their stories and futures.
