Last night I was lucky enough to be invited to attend the Press night for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford. A special thank you to Philippa for this invitation.
This week, the iconic musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang arrives at The Alhambra Theatre as part of its UK tour. For over 50 years, this timeless classic has captivated—and at times unsettled—audiences worldwide.
As this latest stage adaptation takes the spotlight, the question arises: will it uphold the legacy of its predecessors and continue to charm new generations? I was eager to find out if I would be leaving the theatre echoing the familiar refrain, "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, we love you."
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang originated from Ian Fleming’s beloved children’s novel, but it is perhaps best known for the 1968 musical film, which has captivated audiences worldwide for decades (myself included, as I was terrified of the Child-catcher!).
The story follows the widowed and struggling inventor, Caractacus Potts, who creates an extraordinary car that can float and fly. As Potts and his family embark on adventures to distant lands, they find themselves on a thrilling mission to protect Chitty’s magic and rescue children from the infamous Child-catcher.
A standout element of last night's performance was the spine-chilling portrayal of the Child-catcher by none other than Charlie Brooks. She injected a fresh wave of terror into the role, her piercing shriek of "Childreeeeeeeeen" sending shivers down the audience's spine. The striking costume design only amplified her menacing presence.
Equally captivating was the portrayal of Truly Scrumptious, whose performance instantly transported me back to my childhood, evoking long-forgotten memories with nostalgic charm
Overall, this was a standout performance, brimming with moments of quick wit and humour that kept me laughing throughout.
The Alhambra Theatre seamlessly blends its rich historical charm with modern conveniences, providing an ideal setting for any performance. Boasting outstanding acoustics and unobstructed views from every seat, the venue ensures that audiences are fully immersed in the magic of each production, allowing every show to truly excel.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is on tour at the Alhambra Theatre from the 17th of September until the 22nd of September 2024. Tickets are still available and you can buy your tickets here.
