Grown Ups

Ida, a 40-year-old single woman, joins her extended family on a holiday to celebrate her mother's 65th birthday. Alongside them are her mother's boyfriend, sister, brother-in-law, and his daughter. Ida harbours jealousy towards her sister, particularly when she announces her pregnancy after years of trying.

Feeling left out without a family of her own, Ida decides to pursue her brother-in-law and gain favour with his daughter.

Some parts of the book were difficult to digest. What kind of person becomes so enraged by her sister's pregnancy that she believes her only option is to flirt and try to win over her brother-in-law, attempting to replace her sister? Clearly, Ida's actions lack rationality and sisterly affection.

The entire family is unlikable, each considering themselves superior to the others. While the plot was unsettling and infuriating, it was also strangely compelling and thought-provoking. What was the reason that made them all feel the way they did?

The book's setting is its standout feature: a beautiful cabin in Norway that makes you want to pack your bags and go. I was always suspicious of Ida and intrigued by what she might do next.

The book captures just a fleeting moment in time, yet it grips you so intensely that you find yourself pondering what events led each character to their current state.

Overall, it was an enjoyable short read - at around 160 pages. This would be a perfect read when on holiday.
