This week, I was lucky enough to be invited to attend the Press Night for Les Misérables: Let the People Sing, presented by Leeds Amateur Operatic Society at Leeds Grand Theatre in Leeds. A special thank you to Kelly for this invitation.

As a first-time viewer of Les Misérables, I was completely blown away. Part of the “Let The People Sing” project celebrating the 40th anniversary of this iconic show, this full-stage production at Leeds Grand Theatre was a polished, passionate and powerful performance that far exceeded expectations for an amateur premiere.

Presented by Leeds Amateur Operatic Society in collaboration with Buttershaw St Paul’s AODS, Leeds Insurance Dramatic Operatic Society and Wakefield West Riding Theatre Company, the production was a stunning example of community theatre at its very best.

Robert Durkin led the cast as Jean Valjean with remarkable strength, delivering a heartfelt and vocally outstanding performance. He anchored the entire show with depth and control, growing more compelling as the story progressed. Kirsty Townend was outstanding as Fantine, delivering a deeply emotional performance. Her rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” was so powerful and heartfelt that you could hear a pin drop, the audience completely in awe.

Dan Smith brought a commanding presence as Javert, while Caitlin Magee (Éponine), Harvey Dewhurst (Marius), and Emma Burke (Cosette) all gave solid and vocally strong performances.

The ensemble shone throughout, with group numbers providing some of the show’s biggest highlights thanks to the expert guidance of musical director Jim Lunt.

A special mention must go to one the youngest cast member Theo Rae who completely stole the show as Gavroche with charm and confidence well beyond his years.

This production is a powerful testament to the strength of local theatre. A breathtaking experience from start to finish.

Les Misérables: Let the People Sing is on tour at Leeds Grand Theatre from the 5th April until the 12th April 2025. Tickets are still available, and you can buy your tickets here. Don’t miss your chance—book your tickets now!
