By Zen Cho.

Zen Cho’s collection Spirits Abroad offers a vivid exploration of Malaysian and Southeast Asian culture. Each story is deeply rooted in the rich cultural and mythological tapestry of Malaysia, which includes indigenous Malay, Chinese, Indian, and colonial influences.

The varied tales often share a subtle connection and provide cultural insights into traditions surrounding death, spirits, gods, and ancestor reverence.

Zen Cho effectively juxtaposes modern, sophisticated lives with enduring rituals, superstitions, and rites, reminding us that in these cultures, you never know when the old ways might still hold power.

The author is an enchanting writer, and her collection Spirits Abroad perfectly highlights her exceptional talent and charm. While I usually find short stories unsatisfying, Cho's work is an exception. She masterfully crafts rich characters, and vivid settings, and infuses elements of Chinese culture and Malaysian mythology into each tale, making every page come alive.

Thank you so much to the author - Zen Cho, as well as Olivia-Savannah at Tor Books and Pan Macmillan for running this book tour.
