“Honestly, it’s so easy to get what you want from people if they think you’re a psycho.”
Lara Lington is attending the funeral for her great aunt Sadie who she hardly knew, when a much younger Sadie appears in ghost form. Lara is the only one who can see her, and Sadie demands Lara help find a necklace that is dear to her so she will be able to rest in peace. While the pair don't seem to have much in common, they might just learn something from one another.
It took me some time to get into Twenties Girl, but once I did, I was completely hooked! The addition of Aunt Sadie, added complexity to the plot, making it stand out from the typical happily-ever-after stories that Sophie Kinsella is known for. Aunt Sadie, for a ghost, brings such vibrant energy and life!
Despite the blurb, the book isn't solely about a search for a necklace; it delves into the life of a career girl recovering from a breakup. Through an unlikely friendship, she gains a fresh perspective from an outsider on her own life. The real charm of the story lies in Lara's growth and what many of us in our twenties, can resonate well with.
The story is very easygoing and would make the perfect beach read. You need to stay open-minded and go with the flow because it is very out there in terms of how believable the situation is.
Despite having a sense of how it might conclude throughout the book, I found myself unexpectedly moved by the ending and the goodbye that follows. By the end of the book, Lara has learnt a lot about life she learns a lot about life, love, friendship, family, people surrounding her, and of course about herself. It is the perfect coming-of-age book.
