You should never judge a book by its cover - but I do, and this cover appealed to me enough that I took it as a honeymoon read last month.
Your History delves deep into the lives and careers of several pop artists spanning the 80s, 90s, 2000s, and 2010s.
I admired the mix of musicians featured in this collection. However, it's worth noting that these women's songs were selected primarily because they fall under the umbrella of "pop," and there isn't a significant common thread connecting them.
Perhaps, if the book had been divided into subcategories, it would have provided a more cohesive experience. After all, Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj don't neatly fit within the same pop category.
The author's expertise on the subject matter is undeniable; however, chapters about artists I'm less acquainted with proved somewhat elusive to me. I felt that the book fell short in exploring the artists' backgrounds and who they are as recording artists.
I did skip over more sections than I would have preferred, as continuing would have made it a DNF for me. For those well-versed in the artists and their music, this book may resonate more deeply, but regrettably, I didn't connect with it as much as I had hoped, and I didn't gain as much from it as I’d have liked.
