What would you do if an £8 million winning lottery ticket disappeared... and everyone thought you could find it?
That irresistible premise immediately drew me into A Numbers Game, the opening book in the Mal and Jackie series by R. J. Dark. Combining crime, dark humour and memorable characters, it delivers an entertaining mystery that never loses sight of the friendships at its heart.
Before I even started reading, the cover immediately caught my attention. It perfectly hints at the humour and chaos waiting inside, making it a fitting introduction to both the story and its larger-than-life characters.
Malachite Jones earns a living pretending to communicate with the dead, despite not possessing the psychic abilities everyone believes he has. When he's asked to track down a missing lottery ticket worth £8 million following the death of Larry Stanbeck, he quickly finds himself caught between rival criminals, determined police officers and some very dangerous people who all want the same prize.
The relationship between Mal and Jackie is undoubtedly the highlight of the book. Their friendship feels genuine from the very beginning, and every scene they share is filled with sharp dialogue, humour and the kind of effortless chemistry that makes you immediately want to spend more time with them. They complement one another brilliantly, balancing the darker moments with plenty of wit.
The setting also deserves special mention. Blade's Edge feels authentic, capturing both the harsh realities of life on a struggling Yorkshire estate and the sense of community that still exists within it. The author portrays the area with affection as well as honesty, creating a vivid backdrop that becomes just as memorable as the mystery itself.
The plot moves at an impressive pace, unfolding over the course of a single week as Mal is pulled from one dangerous encounter to the next. Every new lead seems to introduce another person demanding the lottery ticket, keeping the pressure firmly on while allowing the humour to shine through alongside the suspense.
I also enjoyed the supporting cast, who all feel distinct and memorable rather than blending into the background. With so many competing interests surrounding the missing ticket, it would have been easy for the characters to become confusing, but each has their own clear personality and purpose within the story.
Knowing this is R. J. Dark's first venture into crime after writing fantasy makes it an even more impressive achievement. The balance between mystery, comedy and action feels natural throughout, creating a story that is both entertaining and surprisingly easy to become invested in.
Fast-paced, funny and full of memorable characters, A Numbers Game is a fantastic introduction to a series that I am already looking forward to continuing.
