The Haunting of a Brontë 🕵️♀️
By Amelia Blackwell.
The Haunting of a Brontë by Amelia Blackwell is a witty, atmospheric, and thoroughly entertaining book that blends historical mystery with a clever time travel twist.
Georgiana Darcy once again finds herself out of place in time. Instead of reuniting with the man she loves in 1995, she lands in 1845 at Thorp Green Hall, where Branwell and Anne Brontë are working within a household already simmering with tension.
The setting is instantly captivating. A gloomy estate filled with secrets, strained relationships, and an underlying sense of unease creates the perfect backdrop for a mystery to unfold. Even before a body is discovered, there is a quiet sense that something is not right.
Georgiana remains a brilliant central character. Her voice is sharp, curious, and self aware in a way that brings both humour and warmth to the story. Her expectation that a mystery is bound to happen adds a playful edge, and the way she becomes entangled in the unfolding drama feels completely natural.
Branwell Brontë is particularly compelling here. His character adds a darker, more gothic tone to the book, with hints of instability and a sense of something more ominous surrounding him. This contrast works well against the lighter, cosy elements of the story.
What stands out most is how well the book balances its tones. It manages to feel cosy and comforting while still carrying an eerie edge.
The mystery itself is engaging, with enough twists and intrigue to keep things moving, while also weaving in elements of literary history in a way that feels thoughtful and immersive.
There is also a deeper layer running beneath the mystery, as Georgiana begins to uncover more about her own time travelling abilities. This adds an extra level of intrigue and gives the story a sense of continuity within the wider series.
This is such a charming and imaginative read, full of atmosphere, humour, and mystery. It feels like a love letter to classic literature, wrapped inside a clever and engaging story.
